Dear Karl,

Down the road from you is the Keck School of Medicine and from their hallowed halls come an article on SULFUR. Have you been up to your interfering with medical school education?

The last reference to my response is from EnCognitive.com the editor of which says he is not a Scientologist but agrees with their opinion of the practices of physchiatry and drug therapy.

Sulfur Crystals

NO! We are not getting enough sulfur in our diets. The reasons are obvious though often overlooked by science and especially nutrionists. Which comes first, sulfur or proteins. Everything on this planet is made from the interaction of elements not by the proteins with contain them. This could be the cart before the horse, or the chicken before the egg scenario?

Sir Stanley Davidson and Passmore's classic textbook of Human Nutrition and Dietetics (Karl has purchased a used, original edition -- 1959 -- edition and will be quoting when possible) [61] who suggested that "it is not unlikely that some of the effects of protein deficiency are in fact due to failure of sulfur containing intermediates or even to sulfur containing polysaccharides. It is even possible that the ancient nostrum of 'brimstone and treacle' (sulfur and molasses) had nutritional value unsuspected by modern knowledge."

This nostrum contains the key, brimstone is mineral sulfur produced by volcanic activity in the atmosphere, yellow dirt which is toxic to insects and man. Yet this sulfur can be processed by plants into organic sulfur compounds like those found in molasses. Pine pitch may be the highest saturation of sulfur that we find in nature similar to that found in organically grown garlic. The key here is “organically grown. ” Garlic can not produce sulfur but can assimilate the sulfur in the soil or added from organic fertilizers.

Organic sulfur is produced when the same volcanic activity occurs in salt water, deep in the ocean at the ‘black smokers’ where the salt allows the sulfur to be released free into sea water. Plankton survive on this sulfur and are the beginning of the food chain for all marine species including whales.

Rose et al are listed as the first to investigate sulfur deficiency in 1955, 20 years after the Congress had stated that our soils were already deficient in many of the necessary minerals due to failure to utilize crop rotation among other factors.

In 1954 insult was added to the injury of our depleted soils, Ezra Taft Benson mandated the use of chemical fertilizers if farmers were to be compensated under the Farm Subsidies Act of the New Deal passed in 1946. This was a concession to the oil companies not a desire to improve the quality of the food produced from soils already mineral deficient, especially deficient in sulfur.

The production of chemical fertilizers has shared one common factor since the beginning of the production, “crackling” at temperatures of 380 degrees F. Sulfur vaporizes at 270 degrees F. no matter if that which is crackled is coal tar or crude oil. In 1955 when Rose et al conducted their studies the available sulfur in our food was about to decrease considerably.

In the article by Nimni et al this basic knowledge of the sulfur cycle is unknown and its approach from the pharmaceutical model must be considered flawed because most amino acids such as glutathione do not survive the cauldron of the gut. These amino acids are produced internally when organic sulfur is readily available. The best example of this are million dollar race horses and the West Nile Virus dilemma of 2001. Here is what Vita Flex advertised: Glutathione for injection or MSM of ingestion, being that glutathione ingested did not survive the gastrointestinal track of livestock, but appeared to be produced when organic sulfur was ingested. The same has been noted for children who do not tolerate Ritalin, glutathione injections altered their hyperactivity, just as organic sulfur has demonstrated in our Study.

We are what we eat not what we take. In the case of sulfur not the sulfates which the Nimni article mentions, sulfur is the universal compound. There is a sulfate, sulfide or sulfite of most of the elements, sulfur binds with most all elements which is one of the reasons why sulfur is so effective in detoxifying many of these toxic elements. To reiterate sulfur in its organic state is bio available for the production of amino acids and in turn the proteins necessary for healthy cellular regeneration where sulfates may not be bio available.

In our Study, which is observational, we supply a pure form of organic sulfur. Merhylsulfonylmethane without any processing past precipitation of DMSO with no additives of packaging and then we monitor how our Study members respond to such supplementation. We follow their progress with digital photographs of their face to verify that cellular regeneration is actually occurring. Radiographic evidence will also be utilized when possible.

We are more impressed with the responses that we receive that our Study members “Just feel better.” This is regarding gastro intestinal, depression, and joint related issues. The cessation of prescribed meds may be of importance especially regarding joint pain and especially acetaminophen and other pain meds including Vioxx and Celebrex. Glucosamine and Chondroitin are both sulfates and it has been our experience that these sulfates are only reported as effective when MSM is part of the formula. These supplements have been replaced with Organic Sulfur alone, with possible regeneration of the cartilage, which is not reported with glucosamine or chondroitin. The cell membrane may be the most overlooked aspect to the discussion of sulfur, the sulfur based proteins and peptides which are part of the healthy cell membrane allow the transport of nutrition and the gasses of metabolism to be transported across the membrane.

The importance of dietary protein cannot be underestimated in this population since inadequate protein intake contributes, among other things, to a decrease in lung reserve capacity, increased skin fragility, osteoporosis, decreased immune function and muscle mass (sarcopenia), poor healing and longer recuperation from illness.

Being that our favorite Study members are over 60, we have been impressed that all of these problems which can be attributed to inadequate protein intake have responded to ingesting organic sulfur. Not from increased dietary protein intake but merely from increasing the bio available sulfur. Many who had been on bottle oxygen are no longer dependant upon it. Those who presented with transparent skin with hemorrhagic patches are now free of hemorrhagic areas and more flexible and plastic skin making the underlying vessels are no longer visible. Osteoporosis has been reversed as measured by bone scans as well as muscle mass, improved healing even following surgery and the ability to recuperate from illness including chemotherapy. As we age our need for sulfur is increased not only for the reasons mentioned but for the fact that our food unless organically grown is so deficient in sulfur. Processed foods are flashed at 400 degrees F. prior to freezing or packaged with preservatives which interfere with our ability to utilize any sulfur that may have been available. When a mortician states that many of his older clients are already preserved and less embalming fluid is needed to complete the task of further preservation.

The whole discussion of the Nimni et al article assumes that the food we eat contains the sulfur it has traditionally contained when Sir Stanley Davidson and Passmore's classic textbook was written. The soil is the forgotten factor and what man has done to that soil is why supplementation is mandatory. Until we follow the lead of Finland to abolish the use of chemical fertilizers in 1985 we have no choice. How to supplement becomes the next issue, we conduct our Study with a pure crystal form of methylsulfonylmethane derived from the DMSO of the Marine pines with no anticaking additives and no further pulverizing which we believe also limits the effectiveness of sulfur from its crystalline form. All organisms known on the plant are crystalline in nature, flexible crystals but crystals none the less. Sulfur is a rhomboid, seven sided and whether the cells of the cornea or the cells of pine trees they are configured in a cellular matrix which is how our cells combine to define those parts of the whole we know as life.

We are sulfur deficient, we do not get enough sulfur in our diets and many of the disease entities prevalent today may be directly related to the lack of sulfur in our diets. Nimni et al describes “wasting” diseases of livestock, just visit a nursing home and you will see this same wasting disease of our older citizens.

Nimni et al suggests that further studies of man are necessary to determine the whole gravity of this discussion. Our Study began in 1999 and though it is merely an observational study it has studied roughly 1400 humans and 120 dogs which no longer limp from hip dysplasia. The question may not be the sulfur as much as the oxygen we believe is enabled by the sulfur based amino acids and the proteins we described in the cell membrane. Oxygen therapy has been reported to be effective in cancer, AIDS/HIV and Hep C. When the liver is able to regenerate healthy cells after years of Hep C infection with only the addition of Organic Sulfur to the diet ( we have had one such case verified by biopsy ) then possibly the current “no treatment for liver disease” could be replaced by liver regeneration. Otto Warburg M.D. is known best for proving that cancer is anaerobic and we believe that the oxygen enabled by sulfur could be a method of reducing the chance of the anaerobic cellular metabolism. Most of our Study members with cancer have used sulfur during their chemotherapy. What they reported was less side effects to the chemotherapy and no ablation of their white blood counts. Procrit therapy was not required for any of these Study members.

We are what we eat. And what we eat is not a good source of sulfur nor are the pharmaceutical remedies that Nimni et al discuss. Our bodies can produce most all of the sulfur based amino acids if it has organic sulfur in a bio available form.

The Live Blood and Cellular Matrix Study is on going and independent with no support by any group not even those who make the sulfur we use for our Study. The benefits of neutraceuticals or pharmaceuticals appear to disregard the basic knowledge about the element sulfur, only the products which are dependent upon sulfur but may not be as bio available as sulfur.

Those interested in joining our Study please phone or email us at 801-290-2013, organicsulfur@sisna.com. Our 80 year olds tell their also “aged” friends they have found the crystal fountain of youth which could be translated into medical jargon as an anti aging element.

Though critical of the Nimni et al article we praise them for writing it. Sulfur is the forgotten nutrient ( element ) after calcium and phosphorus it used to be the most abundant and from our research possibly the most important of those elements necessary for healthy cellular metabolism and regeneration. We are sulfur deficient and eat whatever we may we will still be deficient until the US changes its agri business, which appears to be only concerned about the bottom line and not about the health of its consumers. Nutrition and metabolim, the title of the Journal of the Nimni et al article are not terms that can be used to describe our current food production of food in the US. To paraphrase Patrick Henry, give me organic or give me death.
