National Speaking Tour -- First Year

Repairs and Modifications To The RV

The RV is a 40 foot Tiffan Phaeton, 2003 model purchased in 2002 by Glen Cook and then Karl Loren took over the payments on behalf of Vibrant Life. Karl is paying for this RV "in trust for" Vibrant Life since it is primarily a business project for Vibrant Life -- the Speaking Tours which we expect will greatly increase sales.

Certain repairs and modifications are necessary for the RV in light of its being a used RV. There are three different date deadlines connected with these repairs and modifications:

Completed Prior To September 11, 2007

  1. One of the common sources of damage for an RV is driving or parking under tree branches that scrape or rub the roof of the RV. The Roof is 12.8 feet high, possibly not including projections from vent covers and antennas. Karl, initially, purchased a professional tree branch pruning device and trimmed many of the low lying branches where the RV will be parked when it is at the Van Nuys residence. Once the RV was delivered by Glen Cook on Tuesday, September 3rd, it was apparent that more trimming is needed. The trimming will be both easier and harder now that the RV is parked in front of the house. The needed trimming is easier because it is simple to see which branches are now touching the top of the RV and trim just those. It is more difficult because, presumably, the trimming must now be done by a person climbing onto the top of the RV (the roof is strong enough for a person to walk on). I'd like Mark, Tour Manager, to find/hire someone to do this trimming before we leave on our test week drive, Monday, September 10th -- while the RV is still at the curb, under those trees. Mark has my approval on hiring a temporary gardener-type person, or asking Sean to do it. I am willing to purchase a branch pruning device similar to the one I bought on a long pole -- presumably one without a pole that would be easier to use while climbing on the roof of the RV. Both of these devices can then be stored in the RV for future possible need. The trees should be trimmed so that the RV can be returned on September 18th and park without any damage to the RV from overhanging branches. Note that tiny branches and leaves are not usually any problem for the RV, but since I already did considerable trimming, including of some fairly large diameter branches up at about 12 feet, there could be STUBS of cut branches just at the height of the roof and which could badly damage the RV since they would be large. Any such need to be found and cut back further.
  2. Cut and broken branches from above can be piled inside our front yard for the regular gardener to cut up for our garden trash, or take away. Leave as little trash on the street as feasible -- also not much stuff to be left on the roof of the RV.
  3. Click here for images of the RV.
  4. When this is all properly done we should be able to drive down Cohasset Street and pull into the curb in front of our house with little or no scraping of leaves or branches on the RV.
  5. We will also probably be parking the RV in this spot (if parking is not restricted for an RV) from September 17th when we return from the Test Tour, until approximately October 1 when we leave on the Speaking Tour.
  6. During that time, if more trimming is needed, it can be done.
  7. During that time is when other repairs and modifications of the RV can be done.
  8. Prior to our departure on September 10th, here are further repairs and modifications that should be done if possible:
  9. Glen Cook will be returning to our house with the new part for the damaged storage compartment door. He will repair that door himself.
  10. I'd like Mark to check in with him as to how he expects to travel to our house -- he may not have a car. He is obligated to come and fix the door, but it may be necessary for someone to go to his house (89 miles South) pick him up and even return him -- there may be some better solution.
  11. Glen Cook thinks that his wife (now living in Washington state) has the keys for the locks on the storage compartment doors and will be sending those to him -- Mark can also keep tabs on that cycle.[Mark found a key.]
  12. The storage compartment doors can be locked; however, Glen showed us that the door handle seems to NOT allow the door to be opened with the usual pull -- the doors are designed to require a "push inwards" on the door, at the same time as pulling up on the handle -- to open the door. So, the compartments are relatively safe since casual effort to open the door by pulling up on the handle will not open the door without that simultaneous push inwards.
  13. However, I would rather have the key and be able to lock those doors.
  14. If we can have those keys before our first test tour, fine, it would be more important to have them before our October departure.
  15. We now have a new Saturn Aurora car to tow behind the RV and need a towing arrangement.
  16. Glen described a "tow bar" that is fastened, with bolts, to the front of the car and remains on that car when you disconnect the car from the RV. This "part" does not interfere with driving the car by itself.
  17. This tow bar allows the RV and car to be positioned with some amount of sideways lee-way so that the car doesn't have to be in some rigidly precise position to make the connection. That is the type of tow bar I would like to get placed on the car and RV before we go on our Test Tour -- or we would not be able to tow the car. I'd like Mark to get that done.
  18. We purchased a new Saturn Aurora on September 4th, to tow behind the RV. We traded in our old Lincoln.
  19. We want to put a "safe box" into some relatively unseen place in the RV, one that can have a key and/or combination lock and be bolted to the floor. I'd like Mark to get that done -- preferably before September 10th.
  20. We have to prepare for the possibility that someone will inform us that it is illegal to leave the RV parked on our street at night, or even during the day (with or without regular movement). I'm willing to have a couple tickets or small fine, but it may become necessary to find a different place to park. We have looked at one RV Storage on the roof of a public storage place near here -- but they have no available space -- we are first on their waiting list at $185 per month. We will need the curb parking while we equip and load the RV, but it would be good to find some normal RV park (with or without a hookup) where we could park with a daily or weekly fee. I'd like Mark to help on this.
  21. Either whatever place if found above, or another, we need a place we can hook up and remove the "black water" sewage from the RV as well as the "gray water" and also a place we can check and refill the built in propane tank and to refill the water tank.
  22. Not vital for this first week, but fine if it can be done is for Mark to check out the DVD, CD and Tape players left in one of the front compartments -- Glen told us that he has left all that equipment, and the remotes, that that they all work. I would like Mark to check those all out -- possibly arrange them in different cupboards and give us instructions on how to use them.
  23. I need Direct TV (satallite) for the coach -- at least one service, but the RV has two working TV sets so if the Direct TV will allow access to two different channels for some modest additional fee, we should get that -- the dish can be installed and the service started immediately.
  24. If Mark (or Sean, etc) could find a nearby gas station that sells diesel fuel and has a configuration of in and out that would allow us to pull the 40 ft. RV, even with a tow vehicle, pull in, fill up and continue pulling through, all with proper consideration of what roads we would be on to enter and exit, turns to make to get back to the house.
  25. I'd also like to find a good RV accessories store/place where we might find things we may want to buy -- don't know what yet.
  26. The RV has a set of about 4 walkie talkies that are used for communications between the driver and someone standing in the rear to help in backing the RV or parking. I'd like Mark to checkout those walkie talkies including any needed batteries (they are probably rechargeable)
  27. Reference the keys for the RV: There are many keys and I'd like Mark to get one full set which we can leave in Van Nuys, and two full sets we can carry -- with labels or tags on the keys to show which key it is. Some few of those keys (ignition, door) we should have two more copies which we will carry in our pockets.
  28. There is a "hide-a-key" in one of the storage compartments -- the key is just stuck into the black pebble textured shell inside the compartment -- there is a key there now -- probably the front door (there are two keys for that door?) and also the ignition.

Completed prior to our departure October 2007

  1. We have a room-security -- motion sensor device in our bedroom and I'd like that mounted somewhere in the RV to give some of that security.
  2. We will need a Satellite Dish Service, not needed for the first tour, to be installed and tested.
  3. If the present Queen size bed can be replace with the king size air matress from our current bed, that should be done -- it could be tested for workability and placed in the RV the day or so before we leave on the long trip.
  4. After our initial one week test tour, the RV must be cleaned and restocked, with fuel, propane and water. We need to find a place that will allow dump of the black water, etc.
  5. I need to cancel the temporary insurance for the RV which I placed with USAA, Texas, since we must have the same insurance which Glen Cook had. He has told me that he has added us as additional insured. Jim tells me that he will bill us for the first six months' premium, and that after that we will be responsible for paying the insurance company ourselves, directly.
  6. The most important change I Want in the RV is a securely fastened desk to hold my laptop computer -- with all tested and working. It would be OK to remove the present small table/desk and to move or remove the lazy boy recliner behind the navigator's chair -- and to put an office-type chair there, probably w/o wheels.
  7. A whole project of equipping and stocking the RV must be done -- clothing, food, tools, etc.
